Historically Sheffield was a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. In the course of time the city has grown and developed from its industrial roots to involve a wider economic base. So during the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for its grandiose steel production. Strictly speaking a large number of different innovations were developed locally such as for instance crucible and stainless steel. In 1893, Sheffield finally received its municipal charter – a legal document which allows establishing a municipality such as a city or a town. This was the point of time when Sheffield officially became the City of Sheffield. From now on Sheffield entered the international competition in iron and steel.
