Fire Extinguisher Maintenance
As well as making good practical sense, fire extinguisher testing is a legal requirement, even if a fire certificate has been issued for the premises. The fire precautions (workplace) regulations which came into being in 1997 (and amended in 1999) require the majority of employers to carry out a fire risk assessment of their workspace in order to identify, reduce or eliminate potential fire hazards.
By law, employers must also allocate a member of staff to deal with enforcing and protecting Health & Safety issues and this includes all fire extinguishers and their servicing. Annual independent testing is highly recommended to ensure that all devices are fully functioning and will operate without fail in the event of a fire.
Our maintenance agreements will ensure we carry out the required checks on your Fire Safety Equipment and we can spread the cost of your fire safety provisions over the year.
There are 2 types of maintenance procedures:
British Standard 5306-3:2000 covers the maintenance of portable fire extinguishers, and recommends that " regular visual inspections of all portable fire extinguishers be carried out by the user or user's representative. The frequency of inspections by the user should be not less than monthly and, when circumstances require, inspections should be carried out more frequently ".
Maintenance should be carried out by a competent person (usually a specialist contractor) 12 months after installation of a new extinguisher, and at 12 monthly intervals thereafter.
So why choose us?
Why carry out periodic inspection and testing?
Fire extinguishers are invaluable when tackling the early stages of fire. Used effectively, they can reduce the risk to life and avoid serious damage to buildings and their contents.
But portable fire extinguishers must be properly maintained if they are to be ready for action at all times. A corroded or damaged extinguisher may mean a minor incident rapidly turning into a serious and life threatening situation.
Fire Safety can offer you a contract package of electrical inspection and testing services which includes Fire Extinguisher testing.
The service we provide is carried out in full accordance with BS 5306 (Part 3) 2009, i.e. the current relevant British Standard Code of Practice for the Commissioning and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers.
